Coast T7 LED Lenser Flashlight Review*

Introduction

The Coast Led Lenser T7 was a pleasant surprise. Another flashlight that I assumed wouldn't impress me. I found that some of the features are not main stream by comparing it to other LED flashlights, but the differences gives the customer some features not presently found on other LED flashlights available today.

Observations and Test Results for Coast T7 LED Lenser Flashlight:
The Aluminum body and anodizing of the Coast T7 is of good quality and should hold up to rough use. I could not find any machining marks under the anodizing. The anodizing was smooth and nice looking. The color matched from the head to the tail switch.
The T7's Flashlight body has knurling most of the length but is to shallow to provide a sure grip. The flashlight is slightly slippery.
The body has a slightly larger diameter than most other LED lights, but if you have larger hands this is a feature you may find pleasing. The reason for the larger diameter body is because the battery tube fits into the body and the 4 AAA batteries are two top and two bottom side by side. (see photograph)
The switch is different than all the other LED flashlights I own. To turn the flashlight on you must push the switch from flush with the tail cap to approximately a depth of 3/16" inside the tail cap. Because the switch sits flush with the body until pushed, it cannot accidentally be turned on easily. This was different but it seemed a nice touch to me.
The switch operates different modes on the flashlight and is a little tricky at first. For low click the switch once. For high click the switch again. Click one more time for off. The highest mode is only available by pushing the switch all the way in and holding. It is available from any mode you are in. Once you release the switch the light goes into the next mode. An example would be as follows. You have clicked the light once for low. You then press the button all the way down and hold for the highest output. Once you release the switch the light goes into high. If you started in high and then pressed the switch for the highest setting, once you released the switch the light would turn off. On my sample I can only see a very slight increase in output between high and the highest setting.
The flashlight comes with a holster and a lanyard. Let me say that the T7 cames with the nicest holster I've seen with a flashlight. It is heavy duty and made to survive anything you can throw at it. Very thick Nylon with a Velcro flap.
This flashlight uses an Optic instead of a traditional reflector to focus the light. As with other Optic based lights I've used they do seem to do a better job of tightly focusing the beam for better throw and the T7 is no exception. I can honestly say the optics on the Coast T7 is a quality design. The tightly focused spot of the T7 throws very well. At 50 yards the T7 lit a barn up with a very bright spot. I was extremely impressed, but it didn't stop there. The flood setting on the T7 was equally impressive. When you defocus the beam of light you get a perfectly round circle of light that in my case lit up my whole front yard from a very short distance. If working on something up close like changing a tire, dressing a deer, or working on a lawn mower, the large spot of the Coast T7 would be superb. See photographs of the spot and flood shots.
The tint on most LED Flashlights does vary a little from sample to sample. Mine was a very cool white with just a hint of blue compared to other LED lights I own. I usually prefer a little warmer tint but others prefer the pure cool white this light has. The tint was more than acceptable in actual use.
The manufacturer recommends using alkaline batteries and not rechargeable batteries. They state run time and output will be greatly reduced on rechargeable batteries. I tested 4 new Duracell alkaline batteries in this light and at 34 minutes the light went to around half its original brightness. The specifications state 130 hours of light but most of this is at greatly reduced output. I am presently using Energizer Lithium batteries (L92) and seem to be getting a fairly good run time.
The T7 is O- Ring sealed and I placed the T7 in 4 inches of water for 15 minutes without any negative effects.
To focus the flashlight from spot to flood the head of the light moves up and down approximately 3/16" to 3/8". For a flood move the head towards the body, for a spot push the head away from the body. The head has the right amount of resistance to it. Easy enough to make it simple to adjust and heavy enough to keep the head from moving on its own. It stays where you set it.
If you look at the tight picture of the head showing the optic you can see what looks like a flaw at the edge of the optic in one spot . Don't worry the light has not been dropped. This is a mold mark from where the optic was removed from the mold. It is not a flaw and does not affect the beam in anyway.

Summary:

The Coast LED Lenser T7 is just a pleasantly usable light. Someone can always argue for the switch to work more to their liking, and a little heavier knurling on the body definitely wouldn't hurt anyone. This light may also not be for anyone who is white walling continuously and looking for that perfectly round spot at 10 feet unless you're on the flood setting. Sometimes Optics lights just don't look that pretty on a white wall, but outside this light performs extremely well and those who helped me take the night time photographs agreed. From the recessed switch to the beautiful spot at 50 yards and perfectly round flood beam of the T7 I really enjoyed testing this light. If you use a flashlight a lot for different things or you're a one flashlight kind of person, you will really enjoy being able to switch from the tight spot to the wide open flood of the T7. The fact it is made from rugged aluminum, uses a rugged LED, is water resistant, and has gold contacts are just some of the features that make this a good light. The holster needs another honorable mention also.
