Garmin Oregon 450 Handheld GPS
The Loving Outdoors Lowdown
If you're looking for a user friendly GPS device with plenty of advanced features for you to 'grow into' then the Garmin Oregon is the device for you. With a responsive touch screen and comprehensive menu interface this is an extremely easy to use device that is ready to go straight from the box.
Graphically, the Oregon is as good as GPS handhelds gets. A fast internal processor allows you to skip freely between different mapping options, dealing easily with the multiple detail levels of Garmin Discoverer mapping. The large screen also aids ease of use, allowing you to view large sections of mapping making it easy to get your bearings.
Both cycle and car mountable, versatility is one of the Oregon's key assets. Able to display multi-layered vector mapping, the Oregon allow you to toggle not only between different levels of detail but also from satnav style street mapping to standard OS mapping at the touch of a button. A nigh-on limitless array of maps can be downloaded to the device via either the 850MB memory or the micro SD card slot opening you to a whole world of navigation (literally!).
As much as the Oregon will please GPS newcomers, there's plenty of features to keep advanced navigators satisfied. Plug the Oregon into bascamp and you'll be able to view topographic data in 3D, plan routes according to difficulty, height gained/lost and a range of other factors all viewable in 3D. Routes can then be easily dragged and dropped onto the device much like you would with an iPod. There's also a dedicated geocaching function and wireless data transfer so you can share your route information with compatible devices.
For sheer simplicity and versatility, the Garmin Oregon is head and shoulders above devices of a similar price and is firm favourite with weekend walkers and outdoor professionals alike..including Ray Mears!
