Take Vanessa Taylor for instance who is competing in a swimathon for Marie Curie. Vanessa says;

“I have never had any inclination to participate in any sponsored activity, probably because I was never in a position to do so. People who know me well will remember that only 5 years ago I couldn’t even walk further than the end of a road without being out of breath or my limbs singing to me! So to combine me attempting to stay fit, giving me a huge challenge to work on and at the same time helping one of the most well known and respected charities. I am asking for your support by sponsoring me to swim 200 lengths of Calne pool for Swimathon 2010 Marie Curie Cancer Care as we all know makes a difference to the lives of thousands of terminally ill people by providing free care from Marie Curie Nurses; so give generously! Oh and by the way, get the oxygen ready and the winch ready at the end!!!”

We wish you all the very best of luck and if you would like to support Vanessa please click here>>

I had always wanted to run a marathon and in 2007 I decided that I would take the bull by the horns and enter Belfast City marathon. At the time I was also thinking of proposing to my girlfriend. I had an idea in the back of my mind that I could propose at the finish line of the marathon. Predicting that I would not have much energy for words or the strength to get up off one knee I got my race vest printed with “will you marry me?” On race day I covered the writing with my race number and to be honest I was completely focused on finishing the race I forgot about the proposal until the last 2 miles, it was only then that I could get excited. As I crossed the finish line in a time of 3:41:57 I was pleased with my time for my first marathon. I unpinned my number and went to find my girlfriend with lots of people pointing at me. When I found her she didn’t notice the writing on my vest, she was more interested in my bleeding nipples. We got married a year later.

Two years ago I was living a contented retirement in France enjoying the good life: plenty of wine, food and indolence. Family circumstances meant we had to return to the UK. I weighed in at 17 stones! Horrified I looked for the usual quick fixes and settled on the recently released Wii Fit. Combined with a bit of dieting, jogging on the spot and other exercises I managed to get down to 15 stone. The jogging on the spot began to wear out sections of the rug and I had to get out and about. I live by the River Medway and started a few gentle jogging sessions. This developed into regular runs on alternate days and continued exercise on the Wii. The weight continued to fall: after one year I was down to 13 stone… I now run 10k on alternate days and eat a healthy diet. I have recently joined the local club, the Maidstone Harriers for a bit of group running once a week. It’s great fun and introduces ‘chat’ to beat the fat. Great fun. I am now a steady 11.5 stone, a comfortable running weight. And the downside? I’ve had to change my entire wardrobe!

Well done Chris on winning the competition. We all loved your story and it certainly made us laugh. We will keep you all posted.

See his story below:

“I was disappointed at my missed opportunity to enter ‘Hell Up North’ and agreed to enter as Susan. My friend’s wife was injured and couldn’t run. We rejoiced, not at poor Susan’s misfortune, but at the fact that I could now brave the 12 miles of challenging terrain with my mates. On the day of the race my friend John handed me his wife’s entry pack. I was shocked to find the race numbers had been colour coded to show the entrant’s gender and mine was no less than florescent pink! John advised me to rip off the number before passing the finishing line. True to it’s name the race was hellish and really tough. Whilst pouring my last amount of energy into chasing a contestant down before the finish line, I completely forgot to rip off my pink race number! The announcer declared that the first female was on the home straight. I crossed the line to a soundtrack of boisterous applause from spectators and heard the tannoy boom “hang on, that’s no woman”. Not only had I stolen the limelight from the real first female, I had a face-to-face telling off from the organisers.”

Having been born into a running family, I saw running as the ultimate way to relax and unwind. Running is my chocolate, whereby I savour the feeling and enjoy at my leisure. On marrying a Royal Marine I thought I had died and gone to heaven – another kindred spirit who loves the long winding road as much as I do. The novelty soon wore off – his idea of utopia was not quite mine. After a hard night of drinking we rose as usual to do our what I used to call Sunday Stroll – a good way to clear the head, which he renamed the Sunday Beasting Session – a good way to clear the head. After 2 miles at 75% exertion, 3 sets of 15 push ups and sits ups – on the side of the road, and now a 100% push up the steepest hill in town, in a muddled and exhausted state I blurted out – I wish I had married a potato couch! It took him three days to stop laughing!

Sounds drift across the valley, a haunting, melodious tune reminiscent of a bagpipe. Strange, as there are no dwellings nearby I turn my head and there, on a large rock on a hillside stands a lone piper, In North Wales! How surreal was that!! – my favourite running moment ever, and true! (As a busy nurse practitioner and father of three,running is the greatest stress-buster there is, keeping me fit, sane and healthy )

I started running 7 years ago; my father had a heart bypass operation at the age of 59 so I know I needed to take control of my weight. I managed to drop from a size 18 to size 12 by eating a sensible diet and exercise. My colleagues and friends asked what I was going to do next. I like a challenge so I decided to enter the Bath half Marathon and have never looked back .I love the buzz you get from training and competing, and have my father to thank for being my inspiration to start running.
